History

2022

2022 was a year of quantitative and qualitative growth for Daum Foundation. Daum Foundation began an ongoing support process for nonprofit startups and launched research on developing nonprofit startup performance measurement indicators while also promoting more efficient use of Dongnakga through spatial restructuring. D.MZ and ChangeON Conference were well-received by participants as the planning and the operation of both programs were tailored to meet the learning and networking needs of nonprofit activists. Following the year 2020, the “Human Rights Movement and Activism Grant” was resumed and provided support to 24 human rights organizations.

In addition to the "Nonprofit Startup Incubation Program," which selects early-stage nonprofit startups through the existing regular open call, a new "Nonprofit Startup Discovery and Growth Support Program" was launched to constantly discover and foster those in the growth stage. After establishing a systematic discovery process, two teams were selected for the program. Through the regular “Nonprofit Startup Incubation Program (3rd generation)”, 7 teams were successfully supported, two of which continued to receive follow-up support and became official nonprofit corporations, aiming for sustainable growth. A fourth-generation open call was held for the Incubation Program, and 7 teams have been working together since last October.

Through the support of the Babo Nanum Foundation, Dongnakga has created a space specialized for incubating nonprofit startups and fostered 17 teams over the year. By securing office space for nonprofit startups, and operating the entire incubation process in Dongnakga, Daum Foundation supported the settlement and growth of early-stage nonprofit organizations. Daum Foundation also organized the main functions of each floor, improved space utilization through furniture rearrangement, and converted the basement into an exhibition zone to use as a promotion space to publicize nonprofit startup activities. Over the year, 1,137 nonprofit stakeholders visited Dongnakga, actively participating in programs, collaborations and discussions.

The D.MZ networking program for nonprofit activists in their 20s and 30s was newly launched as a regular program after a pilot. It provided a networking venue for activists in the 20s and 30s to get ‘disarmed’ from their daily worries and exchange various stories about their work and life with their peers. About 80 activists from various affiliations, including nonprofit startups, intermediary support organizations, social welfare sector, and civic groups joined together, and Daum Foundation provided support to build the drive and sustainability for their work.

The 2022 ChangeON Conference was held as a large-scale offline conference for the first time in three years. Over 400 people attended to explore the direction that nonprofit organizations should take under the theme of “Awakening: waking up the mind”. The timely lectures and various sub-programs drew high satisfaction from the participants. The 2022 ChangeON@ was held in Busan, Cheongju, and Wonju. With nonprofit organization and media as keywords, the programs were conducted in the form of lectures and workshops on topics characteristic of each region.

Daum Foundation supported 24 organizations that carry out human rights campaigns and activities in various fields through the sponsorship from the Open Society Foundation. The groups’ main agendas include gender, LGBTQ, refugees, immigrants, business and human rights, labor rights, disability rights, peace, activist rights, and human rights research and archive.

Nonprofit Startups
  • Nonprofit Startup Discovery and Growth Support Program

Through a new partnership with Brian Impact Foundation, Daum Foundation introduced a continuous discovery process for supporting nonprofit startups, the first of its kind in the support ecosystem. Daum Foundation aims to provide customized support at the optimal time to increase the effectiveness of incubation and drive team growth and social change. In 2022, in an effort to identify teams with various agendas, activity areas, and methods, we reviewed a total of 56 teams by systematizing the team recommendation and application process through a ‘collaborative network’ composed of relevant project operators, a ‘recommendation committee’ composed of social sector experts, a self-recommendation site (http://b.npostartups.org/), as well as through direct discovery. As a result of final screening, two teams (CODA KOREA and SHARE Center for Sexual Rights and Reproductive Justice) were selected, and there are plans to select additional 6 to 8 teams in 2023.

    CODA KOREA

  • Impact Capacity Assessment for Nonprofit Startups

As the first step of the ‘impact capacity assessment project for nonprofit startups’, research on the development of 'the Impact Capacity Assessment toolkit for Nonprofit Startups(ICAN)' was launched. Daum Foundation collected the voices of nonprofit startups and main stakeholders on their value of a “good” organization through a survey of representatives and workers of 83 domestic nonprofit startups and 26 related intermediary support organizations. Group interviews were also conducted. Based on the criteria and characteristics of the “good” nonprofit startup derived from the data, Daum Foundation developed an assessment toolkit that focuses on the value and potential of the organization’s activities. The research report and the assessment toolkit will be released during the first half of 2023.

Dongnakga
  • Supporting nonprofit startup growth

  • Reorganizing space to improve space utilization

A video conferencing system for non-face-to-face events was set up in an effort to create an environment where both online and offline education and meetings can be easily conducted, even during the COVID-19 pandemic. Daum Foundation also expanded the office space for nonprofit startup teams(so that up to 11 teams can move in) by reorganizing key spatial functions of each floor and rearranging furniture. This led to the number of users increasing by 10% (1,137 users) compared to the previous year. Additionally, the basement was renovated into an exhibition space to promote the activities of nonprofit startups which brought about successful cases of corporate social contribution partnerships.

  • Running community strengthening programs

To strengthen the community of Dongnakga residents, regular community programs were held every month. Through various community programs such as Dongnakga mini music concert, 21% clothing exchange party, and making traditional persimmon snacks, all activists who participated in the growth support process were able to naturally come together within the nonprofit ecosystem.

D.MZ
  • D.MZ Conversation Program

Non-profit activists in their 20s and 30s talked about "the driving force and continuity of activities," "burnout experiences and overcoming experiences in activities," and "tips and know-how accumulated in activities" through the fourth conversation meeting. In this process, they were able to create and network reliable peers by generously conveying sympathy, support, and comfort for each other.

  • D.MZ Conversation Program - Follow-up Meeting

Additional support was provided for voluntary follow-up meetings to help participants in a D.MZ Conversation Program form a longer and stronger network. Three groups were formed: a reading group, a theater musical group, and a free activity group, and activists were able to continue meeting each other based on their hobbies and interests.

  • D.MZ Let's Go

D.MZ Let's Go is a one-time gathering where non-profit activists in their 20s and 30s share their thoughts and experiences on non-profit activities. There were a total of six groups, including a group of non-profit publicists, a group of new activists with less than three years of non-profit experience, and a group of activists from small organizations. Through this, they were able to honestly share the concerns, values, and know-how of non-profit activists in their 20s and 30s.

ChangeON
  • ChangeON Conference

The 2022 ChangeON Conference was held under the theme “Awakening: waking up the mind”, under the belief that nonprofit activists working for a better world need to once again become more awake and alert, especially at a time when nonprofit organizations have more work to do and more important roles to play. The conference was held as a large-scale offline event for the first time in three years, and was attended by about 400 nonprofit activists and stakeholders. There were six speakers: Professor Kim Nuri of Chung-Ang University, Professor Kwak Jae-Sik of Soongsil Cyber University, Professor Choi Moon-Jung of KAIST, independent researcher Kim Hak-Jun, and Professor Kim Seung-Seob of Seoul National University. • Orientation

The 24 human rights groups came together to introduce their organizations and to share the details and objectives of their grant projects, as well as requests between teams.
