History

2020

In 2020, Daum Foundation closed the past decade by officially spinning-off YouthVoice, and providing Ollybolly online content to the National Library for Children and Young Adults of Korea, while successfully forging a path for the years to come by launching new projects such as the NPO Startup Incubation Project, Dongnakga , and the Human Rights Advocacy Gran

The ‘Nonprofit Startup Incubation Project’ successfully supported the first batch  of emerging startups who were selected and provided with  operational costs, office space, and necessary education for 6 months. The 6 participating teams shared their development and future plans during   the  final presentation at Dongnakga . The recruitment for the second generation was enthusiastically received, and 6 more startups have been training with Daum Foundation since  last October. Daum  Foundation sought to further enrich the nonprofit ecosystem by forming collaborative networks with leading expert institutions in fundraising and legal support that could play a ‘back office’ role for nonprofit startups.

ChangeON hosted a smaller conference, ‘Smaller, Deeper, Stronger – Back to the Starting Point,’ to ensure the safety of all participants in the face of the COVID-19 Pandemic, as opposed to the usual large-scale offline conference. About 50 nonprofit activists participated in the conference to discuss pressing issues in the nonprofit sector especially due to disasters such as COVID-19. With 80% of the participants answering that they were very satisfied, and 20 % satisfied, the 2020 ChangeON Conference could be said to have provided a warm sense of relief to the participants in difficult times. As for ChangeON@, two out of the three selected partners participated as a result of COVID-19, but the major topics of discussion in local media were shared in the form of online lectures ad archive books.

Dongnakga is a ‘space for nonprofit activists’ that was provided free of charge by the Babo Nanum Foundation. Daum  Foundation established the ‘ Dongnakga’ brand identity and created the space accordingly . 9 nonprofit startups were able to move into Dongnakga’s office space, set with the sponsorship from IKEA Korea. While the space was not fully open to the general public due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Dongnakga served  as an office complex for nonprofit startups, and Daum  Foundation hosted various community programs there for the in-house startups.

The Human Rights Advocacy Grant supported 21 human rights organizations that work in various fields with the sponsorship from Open Society Foundations. 2020 was pointedly a challenging year for human rights organizations as shown by the heated competition for the grant call. Daum Foundation systematically monitored the grantees’ activities, provided capacity building programs along with the financial support, and encouraged each organization to utilize this experience in pursuing their future endeavors.

Ollybolly ’s Diversity Korea project on  developing cultural diversity education content and programs for elementary school students since 2017 with the support of Google.org came to a finish . Daum Foundation is currently preparing to provide the  Ollybolly online content archive to the National Library for Children and Young Adults of Korea webpage so more children can develop their cultural sensitivity. Due to the increase in discrimination and hate against minorities with COVID-19, Daum Foundation co-organized with Arts Council Korea < Celebrating Our Differences >, an online conference hosted by the Korean Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

YouthVoice has completed its registration as an incorporated association , and is awaiting authorization for designated donation organization . The current partnership projects will be transferred upon completion of the authorization process. YouthVoice activities have been carried out via online in 2020 due to COVID-19, which allowed media education opportunities to children and adolescents that previously did not have access to it due to time and physical constraints.
