2017
2017 was a year for Daum Foundation to try various projects for bringing positive change to the society and to prepare basis for further collaboration with new partners.
Sponsorship from corporates enabled Youthvoice to meet and listen to various voices of teenagers through many projects. With support from Life Insurance Social Contribution Committee and Kyobo Life, Youthvoice met around 600 teenagers though 28 media education, camps and conferences, and with support from Sanofi Aventis Korea and Beautiful Store Foundation, met around 100 through media education, workshop and presentations for those who are in physical anguish. By meeting with various teenagers in different regions and carrying out media education through corporate sponsorship, Youthvoice was extended.
With the 10th anniversary, ChangeON had time to look back on its projects for the past 10 years at ChangeON conference. By holding ChangeON@ with four regional partners, we conveyed the meaning and values of ChangeON, and formulated 8 ideas for public interest on web and mobile application services through Social Innovation Camp 36. Moreover, through Soriarchive, recorded and passed on the message of ‘Youngbok Shin’.
Ollybolly carried out job training on cultural diversity and operated research association for teachers in order to enhance cultural diversity in public educational field. Also, Ollybolly tried for developing new teaching materials by supporting research in developing curriculum on cultural diversity to enable people to approach to cultural diversity education and to proceed with teaching. At the same time, was able to expand the project with the partners who put importance on cultural diversity and identify the purpose of Ollybolly.

Youthvoice Mini ConferenceOn February 11th, Daum Foundation held a small discussion conference under the topic of ‘infection’, to listen in depth about the concerns on teenagers, education, and media that Youthvoice educators have. It was a small but a meaningful time to engage in deep conversation.

Youthvoice media educator’s workshopFrom March 13th to 21st, educator’s workshop was carried out by regions over two days in Wonju, Gwangju, and Seoul. With media educators and educators for teenagers, shared different views and opinions on 2016 Youthvoice’s media education and could go over the meaning of Youthvoice media education through participating activities such as Arduino art workshop and reforming curriculum.

Proceeding Youthvoice media education (Discover and train media educators)Youthvoice educators met teenagers by thinking and learning on media education with Youthvoice and by proceeding with their own media education project. All 13 media educators carried out the various media education in Seoul/Gyeonggi/Wonju/Busan/Jeju from planning, teaching, and completing.

Youthvoice media education – Meeting ‘School’Youthvoice met 318 teenagers through total 15 media education in Kyungan High School (Ansan), Yangjeong Girls’ High School (Icheon), and Joongdong High School (Seoul). Through media education for teenagers to discover themselves and express their opinion in school, it was a change to experience student-focused education which is necessary for future generation.

Youthvoice campFrom August 2nd to 4th, Youthvoice camp was held to discover myself, to create a unique media work and to share works of each other, under the theme ‘YOCO’, my one and only summer vacation. It was a camp in four years but could feel enthusiastic response from the participants since it was closed fast. Everyone could be a creator at the camp and through eight media workshop, opening and closing ceremony, and the utmost pleasure of joyful networking, it was a meaningful summer vacation.

Youthvoice conferenceWe went over the past one year of Youthvoice media education, and shared the learning and development of teenagers and educators who participated in media education through 9 lectures, 24 media education displays, and network party with delicious foods and performances. Especially, positive change in education could be felt through various examples of media education in and outside of school.

FrientorA Frientor who participated as a communication tool for Youthvoice, not only proposed plans for Youthvoice program but also produced magazine by interviewing teenagers and educators who participated in media education in and outside of school. With 20th Round of Frientor, ‘Youthvoice Frientor’project came to an end. For the past 10 years, 231 Frientors were together with Youthvoice and put their efforts to listen to youth’s voices. Training Youthvoice supervisorYouthvoice discovered and trained 65 educators for the past five years, from 2013 to 2017. Along with this, we came to train media educator’s supervisors in diverse genres. In 2017, five existing educators supervised by being on the field placement, and three new educators came up with their curriculum through study clubs and cultural experience.

‘Green Santa’, A hopeful messenger for childhood patientsYouthvoice carried out a ‘Green Santa’ program with Sanofi Aventis Korea and Beautiful Store Foundation to contribute for childhood/teenage patients who are suffering chronic/rare incurable illness to grow up healthy in both physical and mental aspects. Participant children had time to openly express themselves and to discover their potential and talents through Youthvoice X ‘Green Santa’ program. In 2017, Green Santa was together with 100 childhood patients who are suffering chronic/rare incurable illness and their families through ‘Sangsang school’, a program for media education on rap, drawing, video, and parent education, ‘Sangsang playground’, a program to share results of Sangsang school by displaying and presenting the works, and ‘Sangsang workshop’, a one-day program. In order to share and expand the effects and meanings of Green Santa, ‘Green Santa Sangsang School 2017 Effectiveness Examination research’ was carried on and based on this, research report was made in magazine style so as for anyone to easily understand Green Santa.

ChangeON ConferenceWith its 10th anniversary, ChangeON Conference finished its three year regional conferences (2014~2016) and started in Seoul, where its beginning started. Under the topic of ‘體因知溫(ChangeON) – Warm change with Human, Network, Media’ ChangeON Conference with the 10th anniversary had a time to look back on the message, ‘human’, ‘network’, ‘media’, and ‘change’, that it has been delivering for the past nine years at around 60 lectures.
The conference constituted of ‘體 (Body “Chae”) : How humans should live in the era of technological revolution?’, ‘因(Adjacent, Relations “In”) : Change is adjacent to network’, ‘知(Know, Inform “Ji”) : Evolution of communication through media’, ‘溫(Warm “On”) : Warm change goes on’, and ▲ Professor Jaeseung Jeong from Department of Bio and Brain Engineering at KAIST, ▲ Hyeshin Jung, a psychiatrist, ▲ Woong Hyun Park, CCO of TBWA KOREA, ▲ Chair-professor Hawoong Jung at KAIST ▲ Jongsoo Yoon, Head director at C.O.D.E. and lawyer at Lee&Ko, ▲Seokwoo Lee, Former digital executive at JoongAng Daily,and Co-representative at Joins, ▲ Youngseok Na, Producer at CJ E&M, ▲ Jungsoo Kang, CEO at Mediati, ▲ Minsub Kim, author of ‘Deputy Society’ participated as speakers.

ChangeON@ChangeON@ which was carried out in order to expand values and meanings of ChangeON to different regions, was held in four regions which are Busan, Jinju, Chungju, and Daejeon from July to November 2017. At ChangeON@, which discusses and shares opinion not only stories on media from each region but also on regional issues and problems, participated around 240 people. New attempts and challenges of non-profit activists, innovative education and talented people, collaboration of younger generation were shared in a common space along with stories from their regions which created a meaningful time.

Social Innovation Camp36Social Innovation Camp 36, which had its 6th anniversary, was held in Seoul, three years after its last opening at Jeju, 2014. Overall 49 ideas were collected at the camp and 8 ideas on volunteering, arts, and animals were selected. At the orientation which was held at Pangyo startup campus and at the main camp, around 80 people participated including those from planning/development/design parts and idea proposers, and 8 ideas were implemented as web services and mobile applications. Those who had experiences in the past participated as directors which enabled to implement service with high degree of completion. 2017 Social Innovation Camp 36 was sponsored by Kakao, and had Arcon as the partner.

SoriarchiveSoriarchive opened the message of Youngbok Shin, a true teacher of this period. Total 112 contents were archived and opened from 9 categories including graduate school of education, lecture of Youngbok Shin, podcast, and audiobook. By preserving the message of Youngbok Shin who delivered the true meaning of life and introspection to many as a teacher, it is now able to pass on his teachings to future generation.

Expanding education on cultural diversity to school teachersIn order to enhance sensibility for cultural diversity for elementary and secondary school teachers, Ollybolly was certified from Seoul Education Training Institute and has been giving training for teachers on ‘know-how on teaching cultural diversity through international storybooks’ since last year. In 2017, two training sessions were given to 45 teachers for the first half of the year in July and in January, 2018 for the remaining half. This training for teachers was to assist in understanding the meaning and the necessity of cultural diversity through lectures from the professionals, as well as to bring up intimacy with the actual field with examples on cultural diversity education. The teachers who participated showed considerable satisfaction to the contents of the training, and evaluated that this helps in teaching cultural diversity.

Commencing the operation of cultural diversity instructors’ associationIn 2017, cultural diversity instructors’ association which was formed last year was regularized. Cultural diversity instructors’ association is a research group for teachers who are interested in cultural diversity to study and do research together. Cultural diversity instructors’ association started with seven earlier this year now has 12 teachers participating, and has been hosting reading clubs and discussions through monthly meetings. Furthermore, through various activities including lecture from Professor Jihoon Jeong at Kyunghee Cyber University, and workshop with a program from Google Korea, the depth of knowledge and experience could be expanded.

Developing school curriculum related to cultural diversityIn order to expand cultural diversity curriculum that can be related to school, research for developing teaching material was initiated with teachers from cultural diversity instructors’ association. Teachers in charge of the research selected the topics of their interests such as conflicts between boys and girls, culture of class, or reanalysis of textbook, and received funds to carry on cultural diversity education with students for a year. In 2017, five elementary school teachers and two middle school teachers did seven curriculum development researches. The developed research materials are to be open on Ollybolly website for everyone to refer.

Commended with award for man of merits for social integration of multi-cultural familyIn September 2017, Daum Foundation’s Ollybolly was acknowledged for its contribution in enhancing diversity within the Korean society, and was commended with award from minister of gender equality and family at ‘Commendation for man of merits for social integration of multi-cultural family’. Ollybolly will keep trying hard for enhancing understanding of cultural diversity and its education in the future.
